Scientists from the United States have developed a biogenerator that will be able to produce electricity, oxygen and organics with bacteria and silicon. Ease of use is called the main advantages of such a biogensor; in fact, they only need sunlight to do their job, and the ability of bacteria to multiply, increasing their numbers on the way to the place of arrival.

In order to translate ideas into reality, it is necessary to solve a number of problems, namely, learn to extract the necessary resources from available on the planet.

For example, NASA plans to use miniature nuclear reactors the size of a suitcase on Mars, which can provide future colonizers with heat and energy, but they are not entirely safe. A safer alternative is the project led by Professor Peydong Yang, who wants to use the special bacteria Sporomusa ovata.

These bacteria are capable of producing energy and organics practically from the air, by capturing free electrons from the environment to break down carbon dioxide molecules and produce nutrients and oxygen.

As suppliers of free electrons, scientists “planted” a whole forest of silicon nanowires, and selected a suitable liquid medium for bacteria for reproduction. After conducting a series of experiments, experts came to the conclusion that approximately 3.6% of the absorbed energy was processed into vinegar and other organic compounds, while oxygen was released. If we compare this efficiency with inorganic batteries, the bacteria certainly lose, but at the same time they are confidently ahead of the average values that show terrestrial plants.

Of course, this is only the beginning of the development of bio-batteries, and most likely we will see enormous progress in this area of science, and it is bioenergy that will probably become a decisive step towards the colonization of not only Mars, but also provide an opportunity to carry out long interplanetary flights.
