Lynx in the suburbs

Lynx in the suburbs

In frame camera traps established in the reserve Crane homeland in the north of the Moscow region, hit common lynx ( Lynx lynx ). Before, during winter route counts 3-3-3162. , only trot tracks were recorded here.

Camera traps are a great way to remotely monitor forest inhabitants. Cameras in the reserve along the bestial trail were installed in the summer, a barn was built with meat and 3-3-3337. pebble for capercaillie 3-3-3162. (small pebbles are necessary for granivorous birds for successful digestion). So the animals are more likely to linger in the trap and stay longer in the frame. The camera is triggered by movement day and night, takes photos and videos and sends part of the material to e-mail, so it is possible to monitor what is happening almost online.

Since the lynx does not feed on carrion, capercaillie, who live nearby (the lynx hunts at dusk and at night), could attract it to the camera trap, or it simply passed along the path. Lynx live settled and have vast territories, up to 250 km 2 ; in search of food, they make long walks.

Lynx entered in Red Book of the Moscow Region as a threatened species. The main difficulties faced by this beast in the suburbs are the fragmentation of forests due to country development, a decrease in the number of ungulates, a disturbance factor, poaching and an increase in the number of stray dogs. According to winter route counts, no more than 30 lynxes live in the Moscow Region now.

The lynx footprint in the snow is easy to recognize: these are the legs of a big cat. The prints are round, 5.5–8 cm in diameter (the lynx itself is about 70 cm high at the withers). Around the prints of the paw pads a halo of wool is noticeable - the paws are very pubescent. Wide pubescent paws allow the lynx not to fall into the snow and walk silently. Claws are not imprinted: unlike canine , feline they are drawn in (except 3-3-3365. cheetah 3-3-3162.).

The common lynx is the northernmost wild feline species; in Scandinavia it lives even beyond the Arctic Circle. Lynx is found almost throughout Eurasia, except for some countries of Western and Central Europe, where it was exterminated.

Outside of the breeding season, lynxes lead a solitary lifestyle. Gon starts in late February, in May kittens are born, which both parents take care of. The female gives birth in the shelter - under the roots of a tree, in an abandoned hole in a badger or fox, in a wolf’s den (it can even kill puppies and take up a habitable den). Lynxes leave the shelter at two or three months of age and go to explore the world with their parents.
